The Kohut Memorial Fund

Moved by their loss, Heinz Kohutís friends and colleagues established the Kohut Memorial Fund shortly after his death. The fundís initial mission was to support work in the area of applied psychoanalysis, an area of special interest to Kohut. In addition, the Fund supports young colleagues whose contributions advance Kohutís work. In this regard, the support was provided to Geoffrey Cocksí for his compilation of Kohutís letters, published as The Curve of Life (1994), and to Charles Strozierís efforts in writing Kohutís biography.

Recently, in an effort to stimulate interest in self psychological ideas among young scholars in the humanities, the Kohut Memorial Fund has established the Kohut Prize, a $1500 award to the author of a paper that applies Kohutís ideas to work in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts. In addition to the cash award, the winner is invited to present his or her paper to the Annual Self Psychology Conference, with transportation and lodging paid by the Fund. Non-tenured, non-clinical, post-doctoral scholars who have received their degree in the last ten years are eligible.

The Kohut Memorial Fund Committee has been encouraged to witness the prize-winnersí increasingly sophisticated application of the ideas contained within the psychology of the self to their scholarly work. We are currently soliciting contributions to ensure the ongoing encouragement of such work. We encourage you to help support our effort by sending your tax-deductible contribution, in any amount, to:
