OUR FIRST FIGHT: REFLECTIONS ON
THE PSYCHOANALYTIC CONCEPT OF ENACTMENT

Saturday Morning, April 29, 2006

NIP, 250 West 57th Street, Suite 501, Conference Room

Enactment is a psychoanalytic concept that has received a great deal of attention in recent relational literature. In this presentation, we introduce a clinical vignette – the analyst inserting her unasked for perspective as she and her patient square off as adversaries for the first time. Is it an enactment? A rupture? An intersubjective dysfunction? A Now moment? Starting with a brief history of the evolution of enactment as a centerpiece of therapeutic action, we will compare and contrast the different ways in which it is understood and utilized in clinical narratives derived from self psychology/intersubjective systems theories and other American Relational schools of thought.

Ellen Shumsky, LCSW, is faculty and supervisor at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, The Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center, and The Training and Research Institute for Self Psychology. She has an abiding interest in the relational edge of self psychology and has published several papers about this subject in collaboration with Lynn Preston. Her presentation with Donna Orange is a furthering of this project.

Donna Orange, PhD, PsyD, is a training and supervising analyst and faculty member at ISIPSe (Istituto di Specializzazione in Psicologia Psicoanalitica del Se e Psicoanalisi Relazionale, Roma [Institute for Specialization in the Psychoanalytic Psychology of the Self and Relational Psychoanalysis]); faculty and supervising analyst, Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, New York. Trained in both philosophy and psychoanalysis, she is author of Emotional Understanding: Studies in Psychoanalytic Psychology, and with George Atwood and Robert Stolorow, of Working Intersubjectively: Contextualism in Psychoanalytic Practice and of Worlds of Experience: Interweaving Philosophical and Clinical Dimensions in Psychoanalysis.
